Back in Time

Vicky is bored. She has to do a project for school on an African country. Teddy is an Ethiopian whose uncle is developing a mobile phone which can transport him back in time. When the two meet up their lives change for ever.

Vicky looked at the monitor in the departure lounge.  The flight to Manchester was delayed.  Then she noticed, beneath it, that there was a flight to Addis Ababa due to take off in fifteen minutes.

“Go on.” I told her.  “Here’s your chance.  You know you want to go and meet Teddy and this is probably the only opportunity that you’ll ever get.”

Vicky put a finger to her mouth as she considered the consequences of such an action.  I tried a different approach.  “Well you know it would be wrong.  You could get caught and just think of the trouble you’d get into.  And what about your mum and dad?  They’d be terribly worried.  And your luggage has already gone through the check in desk so you’ve only got that small bag and the present for you mum that dad’s just given you.”

Vicky looked round the departure lounge to see if anyone else was watching her. As she hesitated I gave it another try.  “Look Vicky, your plane’s delayed at least half an hour.  That means you’re going to get home later than expected.  You can ring your mum from the airport in Addis Ababa and tell them you got on the wrong plane by mistake.  That would give you time to find Teddy (if he really exists) and then catch another flight back to Manchester and no one would ever know it was deliberate – well except us of course.”

Vicky knew it would be wrong but her conscience was easily overcome.  This was fate.  She picked up her bag and walked down the long corridor to the departure gate where people were beginning to queue to get on the flight to Addis Ababa.  “We may have a bit of a problem here.” I told her.  “Why not wear that scarf your dad’s just bought for your mother?  That would hide most of your face.  Then if you tag along with one of those large families over there, you could sneak through.”
