Illustrations by Helen Papworth
This book tells the story of the Ethiopian Emperor who modernised Ethiopia but is remembered in history for capturing a British consul.
He is an important character in the story Back in Time.
Find out who he was.  Why is he famous in Ethiopian history but most British children know nothing about him?

The Storyteller

Picture
This story, aimed at youngsters tells the story of two Ethiopian men, one of whom has died in suspicious circumstances.  Yonas, a youth from London, does not appreciate his roots until he meets Haile, an older man, who tells him and others the tales told to him in Ethiopia. Through the stories told by those connected with the lives of these two men, mingled with the Ethiopian tales they had heard, the local community comes to understand what led to their friendship and how it changed their lives.

Ethiopian oral literature is still a strong feature of the culture of many parts of this east African country but it is dying out as the lives of people change with the increase in education and technology and the dispersion of families, particularly as many leave to join the Diaspora in other parts of the world including Britain.  This book aims to raise awareness of the vast wealth of literature from that part of the world that has been saved in print, at the same time as weaving a story about the lives of youngsters who live far away from the country and culture of their parents and grandparents.

This story is part of the PhD thesis into Illustrated Literature for Ethiopian Children - Chapter 9
